What can it do for you ?

Search available jobs
Divers can search available jobs by keyword, country and job title. When you find a job you like you can apply on the web site or direct if they include an email address in the description.
Post your résumé or CV for employers to see
Divers can enter employment history and qualifications through the web site. You can add a covering letter and a recent picture. You can check off most of your instructor ratings and languages. Anything special has be to written in the text.
Advertise dive vacancies
Dive store employers can publish vacancies for free with language, qualification and equipment requirements for applicants. You can then monitor divers who apply for your vacancy online and reply to them through the web site.
Search résumés or CVs
Employers can search the CV database for suitable candidates by surname and country.
Premium options to follow
Both job seekers and employers will be offered premium services in the future.
Is it easy to use ?
The web site is still in Beta which means they haven’t ironed all the wrinkles out yet. Some are minor like the spelling mistakes and escape slashes. Others are more fundamental to the site design and will be more difficult to fix.
Job search
The drop down list is all the jobs that have ever been posted on the web site cut down to the first 13 characters of the job headline. So for example if you are looking for a dive master job you have to choose from
- Divemaster
- Divemaster &
- Divemaster in…
- Divemaster Tr…
- Divemaster fo…
- Divemaster or…
- Divemaster wa…
- Divemasters
- Divemasters 4…
- Divemasters f..
Its not easy now to choose which one you want (you probably want to see them all) and will become less easy as more jobs are added. It would be much easier if jobs were classified so the “any job” drop down became a list of jobs types such as dive guide, instructor, skipper, course director and you got to see all the dive master (guide) jobs together.
Countries
There is a similar problem with the advanced search. Employers are allowed to enter the country name by hand so a number of alternative names have already crept in. If you want to find jobs in the Turks and Caicos Islands you have to search each of “Turk”, “Turks”, “Turk and Caicos” and “Turk and Caicos Isl”. For jobs in USA there is already “US” and “United States”. It won’t be long before someone else adds “USA” and “United States of America” and you have to search 4 different country names to get jobs in one country.
Personal privacy
The biggest problem we see is the lack of personal control over who sees your CV / résumé. We discuss that further in next section.
Is your personal information secure ?
Your résumé or CV contains a large amount of personally identifying information. It is usually only shared with potential employers and it is understood that they will not use the information for any other purpose than current or future vacancies. The advantage of posting your CV online is that it can be found by employers you didn’t know of. The disadvantage is that the same information can be seen by people who are not genuine employers and could use it to spam you and your referees, steal your identity or damage your credibility.
The major job web sites require employers to pay large fees before they gain limited access to their job seekers. They also allow job seekers to set different privacy levels on their “employer viewable” information. The businesses who run the services have strict levels of data security and insist all their clients, job seekers or employers, also abide by them.
The other SCUBA related job sites we have seen have poor terms and conditions but restrict access to job seeker information with employer fees. This will deter casual viewing of your personal information but still falls a long way short of the levels you would demand from a generalist job web site.
Jobs 4 Divers doesn’t even do that. It offers no privacy settings for its job seekers. It makes no checks on people who sign up as employers and fails to ask them to abide by any terms and conditions. It provides no information about the business who runs the site and will be responsible for your data, or under what law your data is governed and protected.
What do you agree to ?
We were unable to find any terms of use or privacy policy for jobs seekers or employers.
Users
They have several hundred registered job seekers and jobs advertised from around the world.
We say
We are happy to overlook minor bugs as they shake the site out through beta testing, but cannot overlook the casual approach to job seeker’s personal information. The majority of job seekers will be from European Union, USA and Australia. They are used to strict data protection laws and policies so may not think to check out compliance on an English speaking web site. The business who run Jobs 4 Divers would never dream of sharing client information with all and sundry but they let themselves (and their clients) down by not applying the same standards to their online service.
