The review

Introduction

Spidge is a website which points you to the best scuba diving content on the web.

What can it do for you ?

spidge home page

Posting stories

It is very easy to post stories to upcoming queue but it is unclear how they get to published status for voting.

Voting on stories

Again it is very easy to vote for published stories. Like Digg, those with the most votes will come to the front page.

Other functions

The website is powered by a content management system called Pligg. We tried to find out what other things you could do but could not find a features list on Pligg website.

Is it easy to use ?

Spidge has a very easy interface and perhaps a little too easy to sign up. At the time we reviewed the site there were lots of so called stories posted in the upcoming list that were obviously from spammers. Likewise many of the published stories had many spam comments.

Does it travel ?

Javascript is used to smooth some things on the site but we found you could still do everything without it so the site should work even on an old clapped out computer.

Is your personal information secure ?

As we mentioned above, it is probably too easy to sign up for a Spidge account. Saying that, all you need is a username and password so you are not exposing anything personal. The registration does ask for an email but it is not verified.

We did not find any privacy policy on the website. This did not surprise us because so little information is required for an account. We could not either find any means to contact the owner of the site which is Andy Caroll of deepstop fame.

What do you agree to ?

Accepting the site as is.

Users

There are quite a few accounts but fewer than a handful have ever published diving stories.

We say

Scuba diving is of great importance to divers but gets drowned out by other subjects on generalist sites like Digg. So we think that Spidge is a great idea and we wonder why it has not taken off. Perhaps the problem is the name.

The meaning is not well known by recreational divers so the site is unlikely to be found. And online diving treasure is rare so there is little content to add. We had to give it a 2 because of this.
